Background of the Study
Illegal migration often results in high mortality rates, with bodies frequently recovered under compromised conditions. In Badagry Local Government Area, Lagos State, forensic anthropology plays a crucial role in identifying individuals whose remains are recovered under such circumstances (Oluwaseun, 2023). Techniques such as skeletal analysis, dental profiling, and DNA testing are employed to establish identities when conventional documentation is absent or unreliable (Adeyemi, 2024). The integration of advanced forensic methodologies has enhanced identification accuracy, yet challenges persist due to decomposition, environmental exposure, and resource constraints (Bello, 2025). This study examines the impact of forensic anthropology on the identification of bodies in illegal migration cases. It critically analyzes current methods, evaluates the challenges faced by forensic teams, and seeks to propose improvements that can facilitate more efficient and accurate identification, thereby supporting legal processes and humanitarian efforts.
Statement of the Problem
In Badagry, the identification of bodies in illegal migration cases is impeded by severe decomposition, lack of documentation, and inconsistent forensic practices (Bello, 2025). Resource constraints and environmental challenges further compromise the reliability of forensic evidence, delaying legal proceedings and humanitarian interventions. These limitations result in unresolved cases and prolonged uncertainty for affected families. This study seeks to identify the challenges in current forensic methodologies and propose strategies to improve the accuracy and timeliness of body identification in illegal migration contexts (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of forensic anthropology in identifying bodies in illegal migration cases.
To identify challenges in current identification practices.
To recommend improvements to enhance forensic identification accuracy.
Research Questions:
How effective are forensic anthropological methods in identifying bodies in illegal migration cases?
What challenges hinder accurate identification in these contexts?
What improvements can optimize forensic practices in illegal migration investigations?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Advanced DNA profiling significantly improves body identification accuracy.
H2: Environmental exposure negatively impacts forensic evidence quality.
H3: Improved resource allocation enhances the efficiency of forensic investigations.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it advances forensic practices in identifying bodies in illegal migration cases. Its outcomes will support forensic teams, legal authorities, and humanitarian agencies by refining identification protocols and improving case resolution, ultimately ensuring justice and dignified handling of human remains (Adeyemi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the forensic anthropological techniques applied in identifying bodies in illegal migration cases in Badagry Local Government Area, Lagos State. It does not cover other migration-related investigations.
Definitions of Terms:
Illegal Migration: The movement of individuals across borders without legal authorization.
Body Identification: The process of determining an individual’s identity from forensic evidence.
Forensic Anthropology: The application of anthropological techniques to legal identification processes.
